Little Boots, Big Horizons: A Parent's Guide to Conquering Johnston Canyon

If there is one trail that defines "intro to the Rockies" experience, perhaps it's Johnston Canyon. But when you're adding toddlers, carriers, and a diaper bag into the mix, a "classic hike" can quickly feel like a logistical puzzle.

The good news? Johnson Canyon is arguably one of the most kid-friendly spots in Banff National Park. Between the dramatic catwalks and the roar of the water, there is enough sensory magic to keep even the shortest attention spans occupied.

Some happy hikers, post-hike.

Here is how to navigate the canyon with your "little boots" without losing your mind.

Logistics

In the peak of the season, Johnston Canyon can feel like a bit of a theme park. To keep the experience as stress-free as possible with children, here are a few tips:

  • The early bird gets the railing: Aim to be at the trailhead by 8:30. Having space to let a toddler walk at their own pace without a line of hikers forming behind you is worth the early wake-up call.
A wide-open path, waiting to be explored.
  • Stroller vs. carrier: While the path to the Lower Falls is paved, it is narrow and features several stairs, so leave the stroller in the car. A rugged frame carrier or a soft structure carrier is the way to go.
Carrying a tired little toddler.
  • Bathrooms: There are no washrooms throughout the trail, so ensure you use the heated washrooms at the trailhead before heading off on your adventure.
  • The "Cave" factor: The tunnel at the Lower Falls is the ultimate kid-magnet. It's dark, cool, and leads to a face-full of glacial mist. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait during mid-day hours.
Mia, in awe of all the "cave" has to offer.

  • Safety First: The railings are excellent, but they are designed for adults. Johnston Canyon is notorious for icy pathways, so ensure you are equipped with spikes and ready to carry your littles or hold their hands to keep them steady.
Two determined adventurers.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Keeping the Momentum: Trail Games and Snacks

The hike to the Upper Falls is about 2.5 km (one way) with a steady incline. To keep little legs moving, we lean heavily into distraction. (And keep in mind, if you only make it to the Lower Falls like us, that's still a fun-filled day).

  • Play the "I Spy" Canyon Edition: Look for the Black Swifts nesting in the Canyon walls or try to spot the "hidden" waterfalls tucked between the two main stops.
Spotting some beautiful waterfalls along the way.

  • Go With the Flow: Hiking with kids means going at their pace and taking it all in stride. We chose to "sled" down icy sections of the trail to add a bit of fun and save some energy.

Getting ready to slide!

  • Strategic Refuelling: When in doubt, offer snacks (for kids and adults). Our rule of thumb is to pack twice the amount of snacks you think you might need, and ALWAYS pack water.

Post-Hike Treats

Once you've made it back to the trailhead, tasty and hot treats await you. The Johnston Canyon Lodge at the base has a small market with ice cream and coffee- the perfect "carrot" to dangle those last few uphill stretches on the return trip.

Pro Tip for 2026:
  • If the parking lots are looking chaotic, the Roam Public Transit (Route 9) is a fantastic alternative. Kids love the bus ride as much as the hike, and it drops you right off at the gate.
  • Admission is free during regular operating hours from June 19 to September 7, 2026.

Johnston Canyon is proof that you don't need to scramble up a vertical peak to give your kids a "big" mountain experience. Sometimes the best views are found right between the canyon walls.

Have you taken your kids to the canyon yet? Did you make it all the way to the Upper Falls, or was the Lower Falls cave the highlight of your day?! Let me know below!
