Hiking Ptarmigan Cirque with Kids: Alpine magic for Little Legs
If you want to introduce your kids to the high alpine without a grueling uphill battle, Ptarmigan Cirque is arguably the best bang-for-your-buck hike in Kananaskis. Because the trailhead starts at the highest paved pass in Canada, you're already halfway up the mountain before you even tie your boots.
Here's how to tackle this family-favorite trail with toddlers or older kids in tow.
Essential Planning: Roads & Passes
Before you load the kids into the car, there are two "must-knows" for this specific area:
1. The Seasonal Road Closure: This hike is located at Highwood Pass on Highway 40. This section of the highway is closed from December 1 to June 14 every year. Plan your family adventure for between June 15 and late October.
2. Kananaskis Conservation Pass: You are required to have a park pass for your vehicle.
- Cost: $15 for a Day Pass or 90 for an Annual Pass (covers up to two license plates).
- How to get it: Buy it online before you go (there is very little cell service at the pass!) or stop at the Barrier Lake Visitor Centre on your way in.
- Note: They don't give you a physical sticker; it's registered to your license plate.
Hike Stats: - Distance: 4.5 km loop
- Elevation: ~ 210 m (The first 1km is the hardest!)
- Best ages: 4+ (independent hikers) or any age in a carrier.
- Highlights: Waterfalls, "talking" marmots, and rock forts.
- Stroller or Carrier: Not stroller-friendly. The trail is narrow, rooted, and rocky. A high-quality carrier is the way to go for little ones who aren't walking the whole way yet.
Pro-Tips for Parents- The "Larch March" Warning: If you go in late September to see the golden trees, the trail is PACKED. If you're hiking with toddlers, try a weekday or arrive before 8:30 AM to secure a spot in the parking lot.
- Layer Up: It is significantly windier and colder at the top than in the parking lot. Even on a sunny day, pack a light windbreaker or fleece for the kids.
- The Road Crossing: The trail starts by crossing Highway 40 from the parking lot. Keep a firm grip on little hands here, as traffic can come around the bend quite quickly.
- Bear Safety: This is prime Grizzly territory. Make sure you are making plenty of noise and keep your bear spray accessible, not buried in a backpack.
