Sunshine Meadows with Toddlers: High Elevations without the High Effort

If you’ve ever wanted to show your kids the vast, open beauty of the alpine but weren't sure their little legs could handle a 600-meter vertical climb, I have one word for you: Sunshine! Sunshine Meadows is often called the Crown Jewel of the Canadian Rockies, and for families, it truly is a gold mine. Located right on the Continental Divide, it offers high-altitude scenery that usually requires hours of grueling hiking—except here, you have a secret weapon. The Secret Weapon: The Gondola & Chairlift The hardest part of most mountain hikes is the "slog" through the trees to get to the views. At Sunshine, you skip the slog entirely. The adventure starts with a 20-minute gondola ride from the base area up to the Village. From there, you hop on the Standish Chairlift . For kids, this is often the highlight of the day. Cultivating Memories: A Day at Granary Road

If you are looking for the ultimate local day trip that balances "intentional hospitality" with pure, unbridled kid energy, Granary Road is officially open for the 2026 season! Located just a short hop south of Calgary in Foothills County, this 36-acre destination is part farmer’s market, part petting zoo, and part massive outdoor classroom.
We headed out for opening day, and it was the perfect reminder of why this spot is a staple for our little boots community.

The Active Learning Park: Where Play Meets Science

The heart of Granary Road is its Active Learning Park, featuring 12 themed "learning pods" connected by a 3 km trail. It’s designed so kids aren't just playing—they’re learning about agriculture and nature.

  • The Ant Farm: A massive favorite where kids can crawl through tunnels and explore the world of ants.

  • Mushroom Meander: Perfect for toddlers, this area features oversized mushrooms to climb and wooden log tunnels to explore.

  • The Orchard Tree House: A giant climbing structure where kids can slide down a two-story apple-themed tunnel.

  • Farm Friends: No visit is complete without petting the famous "Granary Goats," alpacas, and bunnies.

Market Finds & Intentional Hospitality

While the kids are busy burning off energy, the Farmer’s Market (open Friday through Sunday) is the place to find local goodness.

  • Shop Local: From fresh-baked bread and artisan cheeses to unique garden supplies at the onsite Greenhouse.

  • Indoor Discovery: If the Alberta weather shifts (as it does!), the new Fabulous & Fantastic Farm indoor exhibit offers VR tractors and dairy simulators to keep the fun going rain or shine.

Know Before You Go (2026 Essentials)

  • Opening Dates: The Learning Park is now open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

  • Admission: A Day Pass is $24.95 (includes the outdoor park, indoor exhibit, and mini-golf).
