Sunshine Meadows with Toddlers: High Elevations without the High Effort

If you’ve ever wanted to show your kids the vast, open beauty of the alpine but weren't sure their little legs could handle a 600-meter vertical climb, I have one word for you: Sunshine! Sunshine Meadows is often called the Crown Jewel of the Canadian Rockies, and for families, it truly is a gold mine. Located right on the Continental Divide, it offers high-altitude scenery that usually requires hours of grueling hiking—except here, you have a secret weapon. The Secret Weapon: The Gondola & Chairlift The hardest part of most mountain hikes is the "slog" through the trees to get to the views. At Sunshine, you skip the slog entirely. The adventure starts with a 20-minute gondola ride from the base area up to the Village. From there, you hop on the Standish Chairlift . For kids, this is often the highlight of the day. It’s like a slow-motion roller coaster that whisks you up to 2,385 meters , depositing you right into the heart of the meadows. Gondola ride.  Aboard the ...

Tiny Toes, Big Views: Conquering Two Pines with Kids

If you're looking for a hike that's short enough for toddler legs, but still delivers those "wow" mountain views, Two Pines in Bragg Creek is your golden ticket.

While many Rockies trails can feel like a vertical marathon, Two Pines is a hillock with a heart of gold. It's the perfect spot to practice those hiking skills without the long-haul commitment.

Trail Stats:

  • Distance: ~ 2km (out and back)
  • Elevation: ~ 115m (one short, punchy hill)
  • Stroller Friendly? Not this one, bring the carrier or let them hike!

Why Kids Love This Trail
  • Wildlife Watching: Keep your eyes peeled for chattering red squirrels and white-tailed deer. The forest is very lively and can serve as a welcome distraction.
  • The Summit Bench: There is a perfectly placed wooden bench at the top. It's the ultimate "reward station: for a juice box and a handful of goldfish while you soak in the views.
  • The Scale: Unlike the massive peaks further west, this feels achievable. Reaching the "top" of a mountain (even a small one) is a massive confidence booster for little boots.

Parent Tips
  • Layers are your friend: Even on a warm day, the shaded forest sections can be chilly, while the summit is open and breezy.
  • Check for "tackiness": This trail can get quite muddy after a rain. If it's been wet, pack a change of shoes and a plastic bag for the muddy masterpieces your kids will inevitably become.
  • Biking Awareness: This is a popular spot for mountain bikers. Use it as a teach moment for trail etiquette: "When we hear a bell or a 'hello,' we step to the side!"
  • Still Got Some Energy? If your little ones still have energy to burn, head over to Elbow Falls, just down the road. It's a flat, paved walk with guardrails that lets them see the power of the river up close.
