Sunshine Meadows with Toddlers: High Elevations without the High Effort

If you’ve ever wanted to show your kids the vast, open beauty of the alpine but weren't sure their little legs could handle a 600-meter vertical climb, I have one word for you: Sunshine! Sunshine Meadows is often called the Crown Jewel of the Canadian Rockies, and for families, it truly is a gold mine. Located right on the Continental Divide, it offers high-altitude scenery that usually requires hours of grueling hiking—except here, you have a secret weapon. The Secret Weapon: The Gondola & Chairlift The hardest part of most mountain hikes is the "slog" through the trees to get to the views. At Sunshine, you skip the slog entirely. The adventure starts with a 20-minute gondola ride from the base area up to the Village. From there, you hop on the Standish Chairlift . For kids, this is often the highlight of the day. It’s like a slow-motion roller coaster that whisks you up to 2,385 meters , depositing you right into the heart of the meadows. Gondola ride.  Aboard the ...

Wapta Falls, A Family Favorite

If you're anything like me, looking outside and seeing all the snow has you scouring maps for Summer hikes to keep a bit of motivation to get through this cold and snowy spell. Wapta Falls is always one of those hikes that hangs out at the top of my list. Located in the west end of Yoho National Park, this isn't a waterfall hike where you look at it from a distance; it's an immersive sensory-overload adventure that the kids always love!

Trail Stats

  • Distance: 4.8 km route trip (Summer Route). Right now, the 2km access road is still gated for the season. For the easiest experience, wait until June. Once that gate opens, you can drive right up to the trailhead.
  • Time: 1.5-2 hours
  • Elevation: Mostly flat, with one steep hill at the very end.

Why It's a Summer Favorite
While these mountains are full of tall, skinny waterfalls, Wapta is completely different. It is 150 meters wide, stretching the entire Kicking Horse River. In the heat of July and August, the spray from the falls creates a wonderful mist that feels incredible after a walk through the woods.

The Hillock Adventure
At the base of the falls, there is a giant mound of rock and mist frozen mud. In the summer, it's a massive natural jungle gym for kids.
TIP: Bring a rain shell, even on a sunny day. You'll be surprised how wet you get exploring down by the falls.

What to Pack

  • Waterproof Shells
  • Spare Socks
  • Bear Spray
Hopefully, we can get to this waterfall again this year. If you do, please share photos!

Thanks for following along- hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.
