Sunshine Meadows with Toddlers: High Elevations without the High Effort

If you’ve ever wanted to show your kids the vast, open beauty of the alpine but weren't sure their little legs could handle a 600-meter vertical climb, I have one word for you: Sunshine! Sunshine Meadows is often called the Crown Jewel of the Canadian Rockies, and for families, it truly is a gold mine. Located right on the Continental Divide, it offers high-altitude scenery that usually requires hours of grueling hiking—except here, you have a secret weapon. The Secret Weapon: The Gondola & Chairlift The hardest part of most mountain hikes is the "slog" through the trees to get to the views. At Sunshine, you skip the slog entirely. The adventure starts with a 20-minute gondola ride from the base area up to the Village. From there, you hop on the Standish Chairlift . For kids, this is often the highlight of the day. It’s like a slow-motion roller coaster that whisks you up to 2,385 meters , depositing you right into the heart of the meadows. Gondola ride.  Aboard the ...

Exploring Diamond T Loop

If you need a trail that offers a little bit of everything, Diamond T Loop near Bragg Creek needs to be on your radar.

Located at Station Flats (just a short drive down Highway 66), this 4.3 km loop is one of our favorite spots for a morning adventure before nap time.

Trail Stats

  • Distance: 4.3 km loop

  • Elevation Gain: ~120m (Gentle rollers!)

  • Difficulty: Easy/Beginner

  • Best For: Toddlers, trail runners, and families with dogs.

Why We Love It

The Diamond T is part of the larger Station Flats system, but it feels tucked away. The trail is mostly single-track and winds through old-growth forest.

Mom Tip: Go clockwise! Start by heading left from the parking lot. About 1.2 km in, you’ll hit the "main" viewpoint. There’s a perfectly placed bench there that’s ideal for a snack break while you soak in the views of the Elbow Valley.

ALSO! If you go when there is snow, bring a sled.

Know Before You Go (May 2026 Update)

  • Mud Watch: Being a lower-elevation trail, the Diamond T can stay "tacky" or muddy in the shaded sections well into May. Wear boots you don't mind getting a little dirty!

  • Bear Safety: This is prime bear country. Even though it’s a popular area, we always carry our bear spray and make plenty of noise (which usually isn't hard with kids in tow!).

  • Ticks: It’s officially tick season in the Rockies. Do a quick check on the kids (and the pups) before hopping back in the car.

Making it a Full Day

Since Diamond T is a relatively quick hike (usually 1.5 to 2 hours with "toddler pacing"), you can easily pair it with a tailgate lunch at Station Flats or a quick stop in Bragg Creek for an ice cream treat on the way home.

Thanks for following along!
