Sunshine Meadows with Toddlers: High Elevations without the High Effort

If you’ve ever wanted to show your kids the vast, open beauty of the alpine but weren't sure their little legs could handle a 600-meter vertical climb, I have one word for you: Sunshine! Sunshine Meadows is often called the Crown Jewel of the Canadian Rockies, and for families, it truly is a gold mine. Located right on the Continental Divide, it offers high-altitude scenery that usually requires hours of grueling hiking—except here, you have a secret weapon. The Secret Weapon: The Gondola & Chairlift The hardest part of most mountain hikes is the "slog" through the trees to get to the views. At Sunshine, you skip the slog entirely. The adventure starts with a 20-minute gondola ride from the base area up to the Village. From there, you hop on the Standish Chairlift . For kids, this is often the highlight of the day. It’s like a slow-motion roller coaster that whisks you up to 2,385 meters , depositing you right into the heart of the meadows. Gondola ride.  Aboard the ...

Little Boots on the Trail: Exploring Cat Creek Falls with Kids

If you're looking for a hike that is short enough for little legs but exciting enough to keep older kids engaged, Cat Creek Falls in Kananaskis is a winner. It's one of those rare "goldilocks" trails: not too long, not too steep, and it ends with a spectacular splash.

Located off Highway 40, this trail turns a standard walk in the woods into a mountain scavenger hunt. Here is everything you need to know about taking the family to this Rocky Mountain playground.

Trail Stats:

  • Distance: 2.5 km round trip. Perfect for toddlers who want to walk or older kids who want to run.
  • Elevation: Gentle hills, but nothing a determined four-year-old can't handle.
  • Stroller Friendly? No. You will want a carrier for the tiniest hikers, as there are roots and some narrow rocky sections.
  • Waterfall Finale: The end of the trail is the ultimate reward. The waterfall drops into a shallow, rocky pool. It's the perfect place for kids to toss small pebbles into the water or explore the shoreline.
    • Parent Tip: Bring a pair of socks in your pack- someone's feet always end up in the water! It doesn't hurt to pack waterproof shoes or sandals to explore at the base of the falls.

Survival Tips for a Smooth Trip
  • Pack "power snacks": There are a few short uphill climbs. We find that "mountain mashmallows" or a handful of trail mix works wonders for morale when the legs get tired.
  • Check the Highwood Pass dates: This section of Highway 40 is closed from December 15 to June 14. Mark your calendars for a late June or July adventure.
  • Bathrooms: There are pit toilets at the Cat Creek Day Use parking lot.
  • Bear safety: Since this is a quieter area of K-Country, it's a great time to teach kids about being "Bear Aware". Make it fun by singing trail songs or seeing who can make the most constant noise.

Verdict
Cat Creek Falls is all about showing kids that the best rewards come to those who explore. It's a manageable, beautiful, and high-energy afternoon that will have them napping in the car on the way back to town.
