Sunshine Meadows with Toddlers: High Elevations without the High Effort

If you’ve ever wanted to show your kids the vast, open beauty of the alpine but weren't sure their little legs could handle a 600-meter vertical climb, I have one word for you: Sunshine!

Sunshine Meadows is often called the Crown Jewel of the Canadian Rockies, and for families, it truly is a gold mine. Located right on the Continental Divide, it offers high-altitude scenery that usually requires hours of grueling hiking—except here, you have a secret weapon.

The Secret Weapon: The Gondola & Chairlift

The hardest part of most mountain hikes is the "slog" through the trees to get to the views. At Sunshine, you skip the slog entirely.

The adventure starts with a 20-minute gondola ride from the base area up to the Village. From there, you hop on the Standish Chairlift. For kids, this is often the highlight of the day. It’s like a slow-motion roller coaster that whisks you up to 2,385 meters, depositing you right into the heart of the meadows.

Aboard the Standish Chairlift!

The Perfect Family Route: Rock Isle Lake

Once you hop off the chairlift at the Standish Lookout, you are greeted with a 360-degree view of three stunning lakes: Rock Isle, Larix, and Grizzly.

For those with younger children or toddlers, the trail to Rock Isle Lake is the winner:

  • The Distance: It’s roughly a 1.8 km walk from the top of the lift.

  • The Terrain: The trail is wide, well-crushed gravel and relatively flat, making it manageable for kids who are just finding their hiking "groove."

The trail to and from the chair lift. Please make sure to stay on the marked trail.
  • The Reward: The lake itself features a tiny, picturesque island (hence the name) and crystal-clear water that looks like it belongs on a postcard.

Wildlife and "The Two-Province Jump"

Hiking in the alpine is a sensory experience. Encourage the kids to listen for the high-pitched "cheep" of the Pika or look for Hoary Marmots sunning themselves on the rocks.

One of our favorite traditions at Sunshine is the Continental Divide. There are markers where you can stand with one foot in Alberta and one in British Columbia. It’s a great little geography lesson disguised as a photo op!

Quick Tips for a Stress-Free Day

  1. Pack for "Alpine Winter": Even in the height of August, it can be chilly and windy at nearly 8,000 feet. Pack beanies and light windbreakers for everyone.
  2. Sun Protection: The sun is much stronger at high altitudes. Lather up the kids (and yourself) before you head out.
  3. Bear Aware: You are in prime grizzly territory. Carry bear spray in an accessible spot and make plenty of noise while you walk.
  4. Official Season: Sunshine Meadows is scheduled to be open for the summer season from June 26 to September 20, 2026.
  5. Operating Hours: The resort typically operates from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm daily during this window.
  6. Local Tip for Albertans: You can often find discounted tickets at local spots like Costco, AMA, or through Alberta Resident specials at the ticket window—definitely worth checking before you buy at full price.

Final Thoughts

Sunshine Meadows reminds us that the mountains don't always have to be a conquest. Sometimes, they can just be a place to wander, look for wildflowers, and spend time together above the clouds.

Stop for a picture with the bear, right at the base of the gondola, by the parking lot.

Have you taken your kids to Sunshine Meadows yet? What was their favorite part—the hike or the chairlift ride?
